Black Seeds Facts (backed by medical research)

Did you know that black seeds can help treat acne, allergies, burns, back pains, blood pressure, and headaches? We have not even scratched the surface here. You can even use them for hair growth. Stick with me as we discuss this magical seed that you MUST have in your house at all times.

Black seeds, which come from the plant scientifically called Nigella sativa, have some awesome health benefits that will leave you wanting for more. These seeds can be eaten raw, cooked in your normal diet, or ground to powder and used in pastry. You can also extract oil from them which most people prefer to use instead of the seeds.

By the way, you may also hear these other names that also refer to the same seeds we are discussing here. These include: Nigella seeds, Nigella sativa, charnushka seeds, fennel flower, nutmeg flower, black-cumin, kalonji, Roman coriander, and black caraway.

Before we go further, here is something you should know: The taste of the black seeds is a bit bitter like a toasted onion. It can feel like it’s burning a bit. To make it easy to eat, mix with some bit of honey (if you are not allergic to it), or boil it a bit.

Over the last 7 years, I have interacted with people from all walks of life who have tried black seeds. Some have used it for general health benefits. Others have used it to manage various health conditions. While others have used it to treat various medical issues. I will share with you highlights of what these black seeds can do for you.

Black Seeds Consumption – The Different Forms

To be fair to everyone, I will discuss using black seeds in the form of seeds, as well as a powder, and also as oil. This way, you can choose how you want to use it. In my opinion, if you are just getting started with kalonji (as the Hindi call it), I would advise going with the oil. It is easier to consume, with a less mild taste. Unfortunately, it lacks some of the nutritional power that comes with whole seeds.

Using the powder form is again easier than the whole seeds. You can add this powder in your food the way you add spices and consume. You can also add it to your drinks. But unlike the oil, the powder will have a stronger taste. The downside to the powder is that it can go bad faster than the seeds. Grinding the seeds opens them up to going bad easier and so you should store the powder in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.

How To Turn The Seeds into Powder

By the way, if you are wondering how you can turn the seeds into powder, it is as easy as using your home grinder (yes, that grinder that comes with your juicer/blender) and grinding a small amount of the seeds into a powder. Alternatively, you can buy black seed powder directly instead of buying the seeds.

Back to why you should have blackseeds in your house based on the health benefits I have had first hand witnessing from people I have interacted with. From as far back as 2015, I have seen people use black seeds to manage health conditions like vitiligo, acne, hair loss, blood sugar control, and eczema.

To be honest, my attention and curiosity to black seeds was triggered by a group of women in late 2015 who were living with HIV. At the time, I was running a modern farming methods website. They asked if I could get them pure organic blackseed as they had heard that it can help them manage their condition while also bringing down the severe downsides of the ARVs they were taking.

This triggered my curiosity on what blackseeds were and what their health benefits are. I actually thought that they were a kind of drug or supplement, only to learn that they were just a normal food item, so to speak, that have many health benefits with almost zero side effects.

Why Take Black Seeds?

To kick this off, allow me to say that you do not have to be sick, or to have a health condition for you to take black seeds. You can make it a part of your daily diet. Don’t wait until you are sick to go for it.

Besides its powerful immunity boosting properties, black seeds have many other health benefits. As promised, I will highlight only those that I have personally witnessed, but it would be unfair if I don’t add a few others that are backed by medical and nutritional research. Ready? Let’s go!

12 Reasons Why You Should Take Black Seeds

1. Relieves back pains

This is especially true in women (at least those are the majority that I have seen it work for). A lot of women complain of regular back pains. This is true across women who have had children, and those who haven’t.

Many others also complain of period cramps and lower back pains during menses. Being a very common problem, here is what I’ve seen work:

You will need to take 15-20grams of black seeds oil per day through the mouth to eliminate these pains for good. Alternatively, take 5-10 grams of black seeds powder. This is roughly 1 tablespoonful per day, or 2 teaspoonfuls per day. Take this for 4-12 weeks. By this time, your body will have ‘healed’ so to speak, ensuring that you no longer experience those pains again.

2. Joints lubrication

As you age, your body wears and tears, just like a car. You may start feeling that your joints are not working right. It’s time to lube them. Taking 20 grams of black seeds daily will ensure proper lubrication of your joints into old age.

3. Reduce inflammation

Back in 2020, I had gone to a certain fun arcade in Nairobi. There were many kids there with their parents. Unknown to the arcade owners, over time, there were wasps that had been building their nests in one of the kids play structures.

As the kids were playing, one of them saw a wasp and started throwing sand at it. In no time, a swarm of wasps was attacking the kids and adults nearby. Thing with wasps is that they sting you, go around, then come back to sting again, almost at the same spot. Crazy little insects!

Luckily, the situation was controlled fast by the arcade’s staff. Unfortunately, a few kids and 2 adults had some stings and were puffing up really fast. As everyone was working on emergency medical attention, I remembered I had some black seed powder in the car and had read that it can help with wasp stings (but to be honest, I was not so sure). I rushed to the car, picked it up and offered it for first aid.

To my surprise, and that of the parents there, it worked like magic. On applying the powder on the sting spots, the inflammation would cease within minutes. The pain would be gone too. I became a true believer that day :)! By the time the emergency services were getting to the spot, no one was eager for them anymore. I honestly, to date, cannot tell you who carried the remaining black seeds powder. Someone definitely saw the power in that black seed powder!

4. Treat Asthma and breathing problems

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, black seed helps manage asthma and breathing problems. In the blackseeds is a compound called thymoquinone which relaxes the airway muscles while also reducing inflammation. This, in effect, reverses asthma effects.

5. Weight loss

Kalonji helps improve the body’s metabolism while also reducing appetite. As a result, you eat less and burn more fats in your body. The result is a lower body weight over time. This way, you use black seeds for weight loss. For a person who wants to lose weight fast, I recommend taking black seeds together with chia seeds.

6. Lower blood sugar levels

Similar to weight loss, black seeds are very effective at decreasing hemoglobin A1C levels (which is a measure of long-term blood sugar control) while also reducing fasting blood sugar levels.

7. Protect brain health

Brain inflammation is referred to as neuroinflammation. This brain inflammation is believed to play a major role in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases development. Remember the thymoquinone component we mentioned earlier that is found in black seeds? This same component is thought to help reduce neuroinflammation. This, in effect, helps protect your brain against Parkinson’s disease as well as Alzheimer’s.

8. Good for skin and hair

If dandruff and dry skin under your hair is your norm, you might want to try black seed oil. Besides nourishing your hair, black seed oil helps soften your scalp, hydrate your hair, and even help with hair growth. In fact, over the recent past, there are some beard growing lotions that are being made with black seed oil as the main ingredient. Grow a thick band of healthy hair with black seed oil.

9. Anti-cancer

Black seed oil is a great food addition for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer. The thymoquinone in black seed oil helps control the growth and spread of several types of cancer cells. Good to note is that even if you do not have cancer, you can take this oil regularly to ensure that you never get cancer in future.

10. Rheumatoid arthritis

If you live in a cold area, or are aging and a little cold is not treating you right, you might notice that you are getting pains and swelling in your joints every now and then. These might be signs of rheumatoid arthritis. The anti-inflammatory properties of black seeds helps reduce the joint swelling while also soothing the pain. We’ve had reports of some people completely eliminating these symptoms with continued usage of these seeds.

11. Male infertility

The contents in black seeds improve semen quality which is great especially for men with infertility issues. Remember that black seeds also help manage weight, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, all conditions that may lower your sex drive. Eliminating the potential for all these conditions will ensure a more vibrant sexual drive and fertility.

12. Antifungal (candidiasis)

This is for the ladies: Have you ever suffered from that recurrent infection down there? You try all sorts of medical solutions but it just won’t go away? The worst part is that sometimes you don’t even know where it came from.

Black seeds can help you. A regular consumption of black seeds will help you eliminate that problem for good. These seeds contain an antifungal property that is especially effective against Candida albicans, which is a yeast that can lead to candidiasis.

How To Take Black Seeds

As mentioned earlier, you can take black seeds in the form of seeds, powder, or extracted oil. Over the recent past, some companies have started making pills from them too. You will need to take 15-20grams of black seed oil per day through the mouth to eliminate or manage most health conditions. Alternatively, take 5-10 grams of black seeds powder. This is roughly 1 tablespoonful per day, or 2 teaspoonfuls per day. Take this for 4-12 weeks.

As for the pills, I have no recommendation at the moment. I am yet to interact with those. But as soon as I come across them, I will update this post.

The bottom line is that you should incorporate black seeds in your normal daily diet whether you are ailing or not. It is a good addition to your nutritive needs with a bonus of its body healing superpowers.
