What is Wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass comprises of freshly sprouted first leaves of a wheat plant. The product can be used fresh, dried and powdered, or as an extract. It is consumed as food, dietary supplement or drink.
Wheat plant differs from a wheat malt plant. It grows longer and taller than the malt plant which is always served dry unlike wheatgrass.
How is Wheatgrass grown and produced organically?
One should follow every instruction to sprout wheat berries just until tails begin to show. The sprouting process involves;
- Rinsing the wheat berries to remove any debris or all stones.
- Put the planting wheat berries in a quart-size sprouting jar or any other sprouting container and fill it with water.
- Cover the jar or container with a good sprouting screen or mesh sprouting lid. Ensure that you soak the wheat berries for at least six hours or overnight.
- Drain all the soaking water off the wheat berries and invert the jar or container over a bowl at an angle that can allow the wheat berries to drain water and air to circulate.
- After about ten hours of draining the soaking water, rinse the wheat berries and drain again.
- The act of rinsing and draining should take place at least three times each day.
- Tiny sprouts begin to form in three days and after that the sprouting process is complete. Make sure you drain the berries well before using or storing them.
After the appearance of the sprouts, one can plant the wheat berries. The planting process involves activities like;
- Adding one inch of some soil to a growing tray and water gently to moisten the soil.
- Sprinkling the sprouted seeds evenly across soil as you breaking up all clumps.
- Finally, add additional loose soil over seeds to cover them.

How do you consume Wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass has a very strong taste hence most people prefer to mix it with something else for consumption. You can take it with honey on an empty stomach or consume it in form of a smoothie, with milk or fruit juice.
Dried wheatgrass leaves can be made into tablets or capsules. Some people mix wheatgrass with water and use the solution as an enema to cleanse their digestive systems while others opt to eat it raw because they believe that cooking destroys the natural enzymes.
